A quick trip through Rocky Mountain National Park in mid-September a few years ago resulted in the references for this drawing. I am a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation so I’m pretty enamored with elk, but as we topped the pass (and ran into all of this snow) I was pretty excited to see this pair off to the side and down a little ravine. I don’t always put in a full background on a piece as it’s a lot of real estate to cover with the point of a pencil, but I wanted to capture the whole scene as we saw it since I knew it would make a great drawing. I gave this original to my fella as a gift since he’s the one who introduced me to elk and the RMEF (his favorite non-profit).
